New Screencast: How to change keyboard shortcuts
Thursday, September 25, 2008
Many Mailplane users ask about how to change a keyboard shortcut. For instance, many would prefer to send messages by pressing Cmd-Enter instead of Cmd-Shift-D. Cmd-Enter is the keyboard shortcut used in Thunderbird and Entourage.
Mac OS X makes it very easy to change a keyboard shortcut, and this short movie shows you how to do it.
Quick Tip: How to open external links in Safari tabs
Wednesday, September 24, 2008
When you click an external link in Mailplane, Safari will open a new window to show you the web page. If you prefer to open tabs instead of windows, this tip is for you.
Fortunately, there is a Safari preference for it:
- Start Safari
- Goto Preferences
- Set "Open links from applications" to "in a new tab in the current window"
Note: This setting applies to all applications opening external links, not just Mailplane.
This tip has just been added to the FAQ section.
Russian Translation

This is great news for Russian users: Starting today with the beta 9 release, Mailplane talks Russian!
Kudos to Vladislav Pudovkin for his excellent translation!
Mailplane 2.0 Beta 9 Released
Mailplane 2.0 beta 9 has just been released. Use "Mailplane->Check for update" from the menu or download the latest version from the download page.
New: Online Help Window
Mailplane now has a brand-new help window. It gives you online access to FAQ, Known Issues, Screencasts, and the new features section. As it is online, the topics are always up-to-date. It works much faster than the previous Help window, and the Mailplane download file got smaller, too.
Use Help->Mailplane Help to open the window.
Bug Fixes
- Problems using the "separate" window due to a Gmail update (no picture drag and drop, no shortcuts, disabled toolbar icons)
- French users could not attach pictures by using drag and drop.
- Separate window didn't remember size and position.
- Spam and Trash didn't show up in the Navigate to Label panel (Cmd-Opt-G).
- Mailto: URLs inside Mailplane didn't work correctly, as the subject field wasn't filled. This is a Gmail bug and Mailplane now works around it to fix it.
Mailplane 1.61.5 Released
Thursday, September 18, 2008
When the new Gmail setting "Always use https" was turned on, Mailplane wouldn't load the inbox on first try. This release fixes the problem.
New mailplaneapp.com Website
Wednesday, September 17, 2008

Search the whole website for new features, screencasts, faq, known issues
Watch screencasts, they are now grouped by category and can be found in one place. I plan to add more short screencasts before the release of 2.0.
Enjoy the brand new blog. Much improved categories, commenting, and archives.
Check for known issues. The same information is displayed in the "Mailplane->Help->Support Feedback" window.
Subscribe the FAQ, blog, known issues, and screencasts.
I hope you enjoy the new design and improvements as much as I do. If anything isn't working as it should, either leave a comment or use the new contact form to get in touch.
Wondering about the new setup?
- The website is driven by Expression Engine, a very powerful and nice blogging and content management system.
- The old blog posts and faq were stored in Rapidweaver, comments were hosted by haloscan. All blog posts, FAQ entries, features, and comments were moved by parsing the RSS/ATOM feed and generating an import file. I wrote two short ruby scripts for the task.
- To add pictures to the site, I now use the great ImageWell application
- To edit any content, Textmate with the blogging bundle is used.
