Turn an Email into a Google Doc
Sunday, December 21, 2008
Google just published a new and very useful lab feature: Turn an email conversation into a Google doc:
More than once, I've had a conversation over email and later realized that the information contained in the messages would make a great starting point for a document. So I built an experimental feature for Gmail Labs that does just that: with one simple click, "Create a document" converts an email into a Google Docs document. No more copying and pasting the text from your email -- just open the message you wish to convert, click the "Create a document" link on the right side of the page, and voila, you have a brand new document which you can then modify and share!
There is even a keyboard shortcut for this new feature: g + w
Enjoy the new Gmail PDF Viewer in Mailplane
Saturday, December 13, 2008
Thanks to Gmail, handling PDF attachments just got much easier in Mailplane. From the Gmail blog:
When I get sent a PDF, sometimes I just want to view it -- I don't always need to download and save it right then. So starting today, you'll see a new "View" link next to PDF attachments you get in Gmail: Clicking "View" quickly opens the PDF inside your browser, complete with the graphics and formatting you expect to see in a PDF. You may have seen this feature before, in Google Docs. It's the way that we did uploading and viewing of PDFs online.

myMacBUZZ: “Mailplane 2.0: Gmail gets even better”
Great review on the Malaysian myMacBUZZ website:
My favorite email client was updated to 2.0 early this week. Think of Mailplane as a web browser that only loads Gmail or Google Apps mail. Mailplane 2.0 adds full support for Gmail 2 and a whopping 41 new features which any Gmail power user will love.
The author then presents his favorite new features in full detail.
Frosty’s Mumblings: Mailplane 2.0 Review
Friday, December 12, 2008
Bill Martens just wrote a very nice review about Mailplane 2.0. He's a longtime Mailplane user, and just upgraded from 1.61.7 to the new 2.0 version. He talks about his experiences and about which features he likes most. A great read!
Once restarted, the application came up and showed an email with a list of all of the new features included in the application. This allowed me to easily go through the feature list and see if there were any in particular that enthralled me. One such feature was the new Attach Folder and File Bundles feature in composing emails. No more clunky single file attachment nightmares. Now it can be performed in a single swoop.
Mailplane got a 4 out 5 "Apples" rating.

New Gmail Lab Feature: Tasks
Tuesday, December 09, 2008
Exciting news for Mailplane users! There is a brand-new "Tasks" Google Lab feature, it allows you to quickly create and manage tasks. Like the Mailplane OmniFocus plugin, the tasks contain a link to a gmail conversation.
People use Gmail to get stuff done, so we've added a lightweight way to keep track of what you need to do, right from within Gmail. Take entering a new task: just click in an empty part of your list and start typing. No buttons to click and it's saved automatically. Hit Return and you've got a new task right there.
You can also easily convert emails into tasks: select one or more messages and go to More Actions > Add to Tasks. (Or use the
More info can be found on the official Gmail blog:
We put your tasks in the same kind of window as chats, so they're visible while you're scanning your inbox, reading mail, or searching (and in Settings, too!). Just pop your list out into a new window to use Tasks outside of Gmail. To enable Tasks, go to Settings, click the Labs tab (or just click here if you're signed in). Select "Enable" next to "Tasks" and then click "Save Changes" at the bottom. Then, after Gmail refreshes, on the left under the "Contacts" link, you'll see a "Tasks" link. Just click it to get started.
Would Mailplane for Windows make sense?
Sunday, December 07, 2008
Mailplane for Mac is quite popular, and it fills a real need. It makes many users more productive. Would Mailplane for Windows make sense? Would Windows users install a client application to get more out of Gmail?
If many people answer this question with YES, then we would be ready to create a Windows version:
- It would run on Vista and XP (Service Pack 2)
- It would cost about the same as the Mac version
- There would be a private beta for selected users
