Gmail Tip: How to send “subject only” messages

Sunday, October 26, 2008

If you add "EOM" (end of message) to the end of your subject, Gmail will not complain about an empty message text. This allows you to quickly send short subject only email messages like "Coffee at 9:30? EOM". Official Gmail blog entry

How Do I Unmute a Gmail Conversation?

Monday, October 20, 2008

Yesterday, I discovered that I had accidentally muted an important conversation. I found no obvious way to undo it. This lifehacker blog post points to the solution:

To un-mute a conversation, select the conversation and click Move to inbox. Doing so will move the entire conversation to your inbox and will remove the mute action, so that future messages are also delivered to your inbox.

Muting conversations is very handy, by the way. From the Gmail help pages:

If you're subscribed to a mailing list, you've no doubt been subjected to the 'thread that just won't die!' If you're part of a long message conversation that isn't relevant, you can 'mute' the conversation to keep all future additions out of your inbox. By using the 'm' shortcut key, new messages added to the conversation bypass your inbox so that the conversation stays archived. If your address appears in the to or cc field, though, the conversation will pop back into your inbox ready for your attention. Muted messages are not marked as read, are still searchable, and can specifically be found by searching for:

New Screencast: How to change keyboard shortcuts

Thursday, September 25, 2008

Many Mailplane users ask about how to change a keyboard shortcut. For instance, many would prefer to send messages by pressing Cmd-Enter instead of Cmd-Shift-D. Cmd-Enter is the keyboard shortcut used in Thunderbird and Entourage.

Mac OS X makes it very easy to change a keyboard shortcut, and this short movie shows you how to do it.

Quick Tip: How to open external links in Safari tabs

Wednesday, September 24, 2008

When you click an external link in Mailplane, Safari will open a new window to show you the web page. If you prefer to open tabs instead of windows, this tip is for you.

Fortunately, there is a Safari preference for it:

  1. Start Safari
  2. Goto Preferences
  3. Set "Open links from applications" to "in a new tab in the current window"

Safari Preferences

Note: This setting applies to all applications opening external links, not just Mailplane.

This tip has just been added to the FAQ section.

Mailplane for Test-1
Please visit the mailplaneapp Google group to get it. The CSS file is located in the "Files" section and is named "gmail-redesigned-webkit (n).css" (n is the version number).

How to replace the Gmail logo

Tuesday, July 01, 2008

Many users would like to see a custom image in Mailplane instead of the Gmail "beta" logo.
If you use Google Apps for your domain, Google provides this feature. The logo can be uploaded and set in your "Manage domain->Domain Settings->Appearance":
Pasted Graphic
If you use a "normal" Gmail account (@gmail.com), a custom stylesheet can do the trick as Mailplane supports such a stylesheet. It can be set in your Tweak UI preferences.
Here is an example CSS file:

.zYsCRb {background:transparent url(http://mailplaneapp.com/downloads/logo-custom.gif) !important; }

Upload a correctly sized image (
143 x 59 pixels) to any webserver and replace the URL in the example with the URL to your logo. Important: The picture will be shown in all account you use.

“Close instead of Hide” preference

Tuesday, May 13, 2008

If you like to reduce cpu usage to a minimum while you have Mailplane in background, you can close the main window instead of just hiding it.
This may preserve some battery power, but it takes longer to reopen the window.
