Mailplane 2.0.2 released

Thursday, February 05, 2009

Mailplane 2.0.2 is a free maintenance release. Use Mailplane->Check for update to load it or download it manually.

Tip: Focus problem when replying - keys get interpreted

Sometimes keys get interpreted (instead of entered) when replying to a message. Here's how you can solve the problem:

  1. Open System Preferences
  2. Click "Keyboard & Mouse"
  3. Go to the "Keyboard shortcuts" tab
  4. At the bottom of the window there is a "Full keyboard access" setting: Set it to "All controls"

Changed: Apply/Remove Label Panel(⌘-L)

Google just rolled out a new feature to apply and remove labels. It is nearly identical to the "Apply/Remove Label" panel. Now ⌘-L opens the Google "Label" drop down menu.

Info: Offline Gmail is coming to Mailplane

Offline Gmail is coming to Mailplane, it will be available in 2.1. If you can't wait and like to test it: Visit the mailplaneapp Google Group.

Bug fixes

  • Some users couldn't log in. This version detects the problem and allows you to workaround the problem.
  • Unresponsive or slow Gmail because of missing "Tweak UI->Custom Stylesheet" file. Mailplane now checks for the CSS file and will disable the custom style sheet if it can't find the file.
  • Crash when using "Advanced->Close instead of Hide Main Window" preference
  • Tab order wasn't always correct
  • Font size problems when copy/pasting text or inserting/deleting lines in "Rich text"

I don’t see how to change “full keyboard access” to “all controls.”  There is no option to change settings.  Well, it says to press fn,carrot,f7 to change settings, but isn’t working for me.

Please bring back the Mailplane way of assigning labels.  The new Gmail feature is inferior.  The substring matching in Mailplane was so much better, especially for someone who prefixed all his labels with different characters to categorize them as projects, contexts, or actions so they would still sort nicely.

In other words, I liked just typing “rec” to match my “#receipts” label.

Hi Ryan,
Google’s implementation does substring matching on words. If your label would have a space between the # and receipts it would work:
Instead of ‘#receipts’ you would have ‘# receipts’.
Hope this helps.
Best,
Ruben

Hi Leon,
I am not sure why the setting isn’t working for you. This is probably a Mac OS X security issue or other problem. Unfortunately, I cannot troubleshoot it.
Best,
Ruben

Ruben,  Thanks for the tip.  That helps.  I would still prefer your labeling mechanism, but I respect your decision to not support it considering Gmail’s feature is similar.

I take it back.  The Gmail labeling feature is just broken, IMO.

If you’re a fast typist, the Gmail labeling feature is bunk.  When you first view a message and quickly type something like “lr” (“l” for labels, “r” for the first letter in your label), Gmail doesn’t capture the keystroke for the “r” because it was too busy rendering the label control.  This can be awfully frustrating.

Hi Ryan,
I tried to duplicate the problem. I typed as fast as I could, but it always worked… maybe it’s only happening the first time or maybe it’s related to the speed of the Mac?
Best,
Ruben

I just checked back with System Preferences, and the “Full Keyboard Access” issue self-resolved.

Hi Leon,
Good to hear.

Ruben,

It happens on the first view of any mail message.  Subsequent “l” presses works fine, but the first is always a problem.  To reproduce, go to Inbox, view a particular message, try typing “lx” where x is the first letter of a label.  Go back to the Inbox and view the message again if you don’t think you typed fast enough.

I run a Macbook Pro 2.6GHz Core 2 Due with 4GB RAM.  I do however have 108 labels, which is more likely the culprit.

Please bring back the Mailplane labeling feature.  It was one of the major reasons I purchased Mailplane.

Hi Ryan,
I haven’t forgotten you or the other ⌘-L users. I am currently considering to bring back the Mailplane Apply/Remove panel. I’ll keep you posted.

Hi Ryan,
The “Apply/Remove Label” panel is back. It’s available in 2.0.3 and 2.1-beta. Press ⌘-L to use it :)
Best regards,
Ruben
