Tip: Send mail from another address without “on behalf of”

Monday, August 03, 2009

Google now offers a way to remove the "on behalf of" message your messages.

Here's the problem:

Quite a few of you use Gmail's custom "From:" to send messages with one of your other email addresses listed in place of your Gmail address. Since these messages are sent by Gmail's servers but "from" a non-Gmail address, we have to include your original Gmail username in the "Sender" field of the message header to comply with mail delivery protocols and help prevent your mail from being marked as spam. Most email programs just display the "From" address and not the "Sender" field, but some (including versions of Microsoft Outlook) show these messages as coming "From username@gmail.com On Behalf Of customaddress@mydomain.com" which really annoyed people.

We heard your request for another option that wouldn't show the "on behalf of" text loud and clear, and now there's a new option that does just that. Instead of using Gmail's servers to send the message, we'll use the servers where your other email address lives. Since Gmail isn't the originating domain, we don't have to include "Sender" info in the header. No more "on behalf of."

All custom "From:" addresses used to work like this:

The old way.

The solution:

Now, if your other email provider supports POP and/or IMAP access authenticated SMTP, you can choose to send your message like this instead:

The new way.

To switch to this new method, go to the Accounts page under Settings, and click "edit info" from the "Send mail as" section. Then choose the option to "Use your other email provider's SMTP servers."

Just a quick note: Its not POP/IMAP you need at your email provider, but authenticated SMTP.

Hi Jarle Dahl Bergersen,

Thanks for your comment. You’re right: I just corrected the blog post.

Kind regards,

I am using two Gmail accounts. It doesn’t have the option to change the SENDER field in the message header. Help!

I did this experiment between my two email accounts:

I always log in to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). If I send FROM .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), the following information shows up in the headers:

SENDER: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
...
...
...
FROM: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Is there a workaround for this? I’d like to see it this way:

SENDER: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
...
...
...
FROM: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Thanks!

Hi Kit,
You need to setup your own SMTP server and then configure Gmail to use it. Here’s the official Gmail help page:

Hi Ruben,

I think that works if the custom FROM address is other than Gmail. There are no SMTP options if the custom FROM address is still within Gmail. Note my examples (.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) and .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address))

Hi Kit,

Ok, I overlooked that. In this case you’d need to switch to the .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) account to send your email. Mailplane lets you do that, just use ⌘-⇧ -A or the account drawer.

Hi Ruben,

Problem is, I don’t have a Mac. Haha! :) Anyway, thanks. I guess they haven’t yet fully implemented the custom FROM for Gmail accounts.
