Background information
The current official Google Gears for Safari download doesn't support Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard). I found this statement as an issue comment: Google Gears Issue 847:
Snow Leopard and Safari 4 introduced some changes which are incompatible with Gears. Apple made these changes to improve the security of their OS and of Safari. While we continue to talk to Apple about the issue there is no workaround for us at this time.
Gears continues to work with Firefox on Mac OS X.
The problem seems to the new 64bit Safari version. It doesn't load any InputManagers like Google Gears.
However: Mailplane, Fluid, or even 32bit Safari would still be capable of loading Google Gears, even under Snow Leopard. To get our beloved "Offline Gmail" this page provides you with the 32bit Snow Leopard package.
How was the package built?
- I checked out the code from the Google Gears source code page. (Subversion revision 3399 - September 2nd)
- Then I made these changes:
- Removed the OSX version check
- Entered an empty method on the GearsEnabler class so Mailplane can detect if the "right" Gears has been installed.
- Built the package on Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard)
